The Shoot

The Shoot: Mirror Mirror

Hello world,

I like shiny things. I’ve often been called a magpie, because much like the maligned bird I can’t help but be drawn to nice shiny things. So you can imagine how I’d react to the metallic trend.

I love that you can see your reflection in your clothes, how the light bounces off the surface and how it seems to make everything brighter and shinier. Metallics just make the world that much brighter, and I’m convinced that’s why we’re still drawn to precious metals.

This is a bit of a twist on the metallic trend. With a previous ‘Look of the Day’ post I focused a little on the prevalence of silver in this season’s collections, but here I wanted to do more than wear shiny silver clothes. That’s why I love this two-tone skater dress from Topshop. It’s metallic, yet it flits between copper and sapphire depending on the light.

The skirt is so flattering and to add a little more to the outfit, I teamed it with my trusty paneled tee from H&M Trend that I seem to be using way too often in this blog. The shoes are an old pair of Zara heels, along with a burnished metallic belt that’s at least three years old.

The bag is a very old piece from Berlin when I lived there in the summer of 2008, and it’s from an Italian brand called Coco California. It too is a two-tone metallic clutch and it fits very nicely with the dress. The necklace is from H&M, and the rings are from my large collection of silver rings.

I was having so much fun shooting in Greenwich that it started getting dark, which only prompted me to stay longer and start shooting with the lights coming on. It can be an absolute nightmare to shoot in the dark, what with fading light and a flash gun washing everything out, but it was a nice challenge to do. It also created a lovely orange tone to the images.

I also love that I got a great view of Canary Wharf just across the river from Greenwich. It is lit up in various colours at night and looks so pretty. It also makes for a great backdrop. 🙂

So let me know what you think of this shoot. I like it. It’s quirky and so much fun to shoot in the fading light surrounded by the magnificent and historic building of the Old Royal Naval College. If you’re ever in London, they are worth a look, especially at dusk.
