The Editor's Letter

Welcome to the annual ‘The September Issue’ for 2021. It’s been a while since I’ve done this on the website, but last year it didn’t feel appropriate to focus on the latest fashion trends with the world in such a flux. But we’re not in the situation we were a year ago; vaccines are being administered all over the world, and hope and optimism are returning. And we’re seeing that in our fashion.

This September has been the first fashion month that has actually felt like the old fashion weeks pre-pandemic, and so it seemed right to return too. Designers have been holding so many in-person collections and the high street shops are alive with outfits ready to be worn in a sociable world.

The analogy of comparing our era to that of the 1920’s, arising from the darkness of the first world war, the Spanish Flu, and having lost hundreds of millions of people is one that resonates incredibly with people today. And who can blame them? It seems a century later we are in the same place again. And it’s this looking to the past for inspiration and guidance that was all over the runways. It’s why the 1920’s trend is so big, and it’s something that I’ve appreciated too. The designers have been looking back through past eras for ideas, and this concept of looking back resonated with me. It’s why I based 4 of the editorial shoots on different eras in history, some as far back as a century, and some that only occurred 20 years ago.

So, while I have the usual editorial trends focusing on key trend pieces like knitwear, suiting and saturation; I’ve also created 4 editorial shoots that highlighted great fashion era of the past. They are the Miami Vice, Y2K, The Roaring 20’s and Studio 54, encompassing the major trends for autumn/winter 2021.

This year’s edition is a little different from the last one I done in 2019. I’ve stripped back a lot more of the articles, and instead focusing purely on the fashion. Not everything will be launched immediately, so do make sure to check in on this page time and again for the latest editorial shoots, ‘Style the Trends’ and the September-edition of ‘The Fashion Charts’.

Do come back over regularly over the next couple of weeks as we release the other articles and shoots from ‘The September Issue’ 2021.
