The Shoot

The Shoot: The Finance District

I’ve wanted to do a shoot with a wig for quite a while now. It was an American Vogue September issue shoot from 2012 with Karlie Kloss that first got me onto the idea and it seemed like such a brilliant way of jazzing up a normal shoot and turn it into something unusual.

Unfortunately I ended up buying the completely wrong wig that shed far too much hair right at the start and I had to cut it and try and style it to hide the bad weave on it. So, while I still like this shoot and especially the location, it really could have been much better. But that’s how you learn.

So the idea behind this shoot was to do single colour block outfits in a slight business-style feel with the electric blue wig to act as a counter. The outfits actually worked out quite well; the Topshop fuchsia  blazer dress was as nice as it seemed and the Zara faux leather biker jacket was the perfect companion piece to the mustard yellow H&M workwear dress. To finish the outfit off, I used an old pair of Zara silver court heels so it wouldn’t detract from the hot pink and mustard yellow.

So the location is Canary Wharf or our newer finance district in London, since we actually have two. I’ve actually shot in this general location twice before, first here and then here. The place is so modern and interesting with so many nooks and crannies that I could easily see myself doing another shoot here before I start to run out of ideas with this location. I was glad I finally managed to shoot the traffic island structure from the first image as it’s been on my to-do list for quite a few years now. I’m also very pleased with the shot standing in the middle of the street with the high rise buildings in the background as that image took quite a while to perfect. Thank God the security guards all around Canary Wharf left me in peace while this shot was taken.

So to finish this post off, this shoot had all the potential, I just didn’t quite have the skill yet to pull it off. Maybe I’m just being too critical on myself and maybe you guys like it just fine. Let me know either way.
