The Shoot

The Shoot: The Selfie Factory, part 1

So, a few weeks ago I got to go to a really pop-up event in Shoreditch called The Selfie Factory. I managed to get tickets for their last day in London, and with some hesitation I went to the event by myself. I was originally meant to have a friend go with me, but she had to cancel so alone I went. I wasn’t quite sure what to make of it; whether it would all be some gimmick, or whether it would be worth the entrance fee to get inside.

I was pleasantly surprised. It was pretty awesome, and with over 10 scenes where you can grab really cool and interesting images, it was so worth the trek out to Bethnal Green Road, the pissing rain that evening and the rather high cost to get inside. In fact I got so many cool images, I had to split them up into two blog posts because there were just so many great images.

I only decided to shoot with one outfit, as I had 60 minutes inside and I had a feeling it would be busy. It really was busy and having to change outfits would have just put me under more time pressure. I also had another unusual challenge, in that my DSLR was having some issues with low lighting and my remote, so all these images were shot on my iPhone. Thankfully the lens in iPhones have improved dramatically since the days of the old 3GS, and with each scene lit beautifully by overhead LED studio lights, I barely had to do any of the usual photography setups.

It added another dynamism to the entire shoot, and one I found quite freeing from having to worry about lighting, angles, exposure levels and flash. It meant I could try and be more creative with my angles and propose, test and execute them much quicker than on a DSLR. I enjoyed that freedom so much, that when I shot the Moschino shoot a few days later, and my camera was giving me serious issue I was able to continue the shoot with my iPhone too and produced some great angles.

So, to showcase all the different scenes, I’ve split them up to make it easier to digest. Enjoy this shoot. It was an absolute blast to do!
