Hello world,
I came across this amazing statement felt necklace on Etsy by a girl named Giia, (check out her online store here) and I just fell in love with her grey Organic V Bib Statement Necklace. They’re only $90, but I thought I might make my own in a more vibrant colour. I believe Andy from Stylescrapbook also had a necklace by Giia and I loved how hers was in such a bright fluorescent colour, so I thought since I didn’t have the money to buy it, I would make my own. You can follow my instructions below and make your own, but I’d definitely recommend visiting her site and checking out her other amazing pieces.
Okay what you need are;
Felt – you only need a quarter of a metre as anything else would just be a waste.
Felt glue
Ruler
Coloured ribbon – no more than half a metre long
Good scissors
I then just added more and shaped it to fit around the neck and lastly used some coloured ribbons to close the necklace with.
Again these can be made in any colour you like, but I preferred a nice sunny yellow. I’ll post some photos of me wearing the necklace in a few days with a nice new outfit. Let me know what you think!

I think it took something like half an hour for the glue to start drying but because it takes so long to make all the circles, I didn’t attach them to each other until I had them all done.

It would be cool to sew the circles together too, I think. If you want, you could also sew with a contrasting thread, and sew it together at several points, which would cause the circles to get a bit of texture and if using contrasting thread, they could get “stripes”. Just make the circles at a size where the machine foot can enter into it, then sew and reverse to get back out of the circle. Then the circles finally could be put together with glue or a single stitch to attach it to the circles near it. It would probably make it even more sturdy.
Cut out felt circles on top of each other, e.g. of the same color or e.g. different shades of the same color (gradually getting darker or lighter), sewn together by either letting a vertical stripe go through it, by machine sewing a pattern on top of each stack, by sewing on a pearl or more etc. etc. That could also look really cool, I think. I have always liked those necklaces where you have either an 1-2″ long chain or a long pendant hanging down (vertically) from the chain around your neck. It could be really cool to make such a necklace from felt. I think I would e.g. love making first a 2″ circle with gradually smaller circles on top, then an a bit smaller circle with gradually smaller circles on top of that, then one a bit smaller, then sew the “stacks” of felt together to form the pendant with a straight line of contrasting thread (just going from one to the next and if needed, add a strip of felt underneath them. The row of 3 “circle stacks” could get this narrow strip of felt under them (vertically), which at the top has been folded down to make a little hem (sewn in place with a horisontal line of stitching), which a chain, beaded necklace, cord or ribbon (satin or velvet) can be passed through to fasten the “felt pendant” around your neck. The circles can be fastened to the strip by a vertical seam through all, by fastening with a stitch through all the layers or by fastening a cool pearl or button to the top of the stacks. Or you could use craft glue too (but I am not too fond of gluing all sorts of things, I like sewing better and the stitching can add a cool detail, you can also use a cool, thick topstitching or furniture thread or even use a nice yarn and fasten it to form the top detail by sewing a narrow zig-zag seam on top of the thread (there are special pressure feet for the machines that has a slot to lead such a yarn, ribbon or whatever, but you can do it with no special foot for the sewing machine too) – I think that could be really, really cool. Personally I have always liked a quite minimalistic design on things, and I really love simple, graphic designs/patterns – so I guess such necklaces could be something for me to make (and hopefully end out actually using, I’m not very good at remembering to actually put things I have on…). Because of my likes for such things, I wouldn’t decorate it too much, but I’m sure a lot of details and bling can be added, if that is what you like… You could even use felt heart shapes for it too, e.g. as a Valentines Day necklace? 🙂
Could be cool also to make your own felt for such necklaces by machine washing either pieces of wool from an old coat, jacket or similar or by machine felting old sweaters. By using such material, you could get something really unique which nobody else has, and it could get fun colors/patterns (plus it could be 100% free to make)… 🙂 It could also be combined with knitted cords, if you use wool yarn, they make the most beautiful felted cords. I have rolled them together to form spiral circles, and these look real cool and could also make some real neat felt necklaces (would probably be interesting to thread metal wire through the cords, so they can be put into spirals, circles etc., then use the shapes in necklaces – if not too long, they could probably be felted with metal wire inside)! Felted cord could of course be combined with such a necklace as this, either to form a “chain” which is attached to the “pendant” part of the necklace or to form the tie instead of the satin ribbon – or to form the pendant itself.
Making knitted I-cords, is easy. You can make them either by knitting with needles (look up tutorials online), by knitting with a knitting spool (French Knitter, Knitting Nancy etc., has many names!). You can also make one yourself by using an old wooden thread spool and placing 4 thin nails in a square around the hole on one end of the spool, then using that to as a little manual “knitting machine”, by using a knitting needle or a crochet hook to form the stitches – look up tutorials online if you don’t know how to do it. You then machine wash the cord to felt it (or use it as it is). You can also buy this little manual/crank machine, the Embellish Knit I-cord maker that knits yards of cord in only minutes (I LOVE mine, got it on eBay for $14.90, I think!). The little machine is also available in a couple of varieties, one knits metal wire I-cord, which really can be used for some super cool necklaces, bracelets or to fasten on clothing or bags for some very unique detailing… Our fantasy is the limit, I guess… 🙂
